They knew it was coming. They just didn’t know how they were going to look.

It was makeover week on Canada’s Next Top Model, and the frenzied colouring and cutting spree at Holts Salon & Spa , which for some meant saying goodbye to their beloved locks, transformed the finalists into top model material.

Ebonie:

Before: Long black hair with weave
After: Shorter bob with weave taken out and put back in
Inspiration: Halle Berry

Q: What do you think of your new look?

“They cut my hair into (a Halle Berry-like) cut and then realized they couldn’t actually do the colour so we just put weave back on and now I have this bob kind of cut, kind of like Rihanna when she had long hair. I like it … I just feel that the first look that Jay had planned for me would’ve made me stand out more.”

A: Do you feel like the look you got will hold you back from standing out?”

“Not really because I think it’s all about personality and it’s all about how I work it so I’m definitely not going to let it show.”

Heather:

Before: Long and blonde
After: Bright strawberry blonde with bleached eyebrows

Q: What do you think of your new look?

A: “I’m actually not sure how I feel about it right now. I know it’s very high fashion but I feel like walking around, people are just going to look at me a little strange. I have no eyebrows. So I’m really just trying to work with it, trying to like the look.”

Q: Are you really having a hard time with how light your hair and eyebrows are?

A: “At first I was really sort of excited about it. I think today I was kind of upset just because when we were out doing a challenge people were already starting to look at me funny so I felt like maybe when I get home it will be a little strange.”

Jill:

Before: Long and blonde with blunt fringe
After: Cut above shoulders with layered bangs to side, brighter blonde
Inspiration: Deborah Harry with a modern twist

Q: What do you think of your new look?

A: “I love it. I mean, the blonde, they just kind of brightened up a bit and took away the gold undertones in it. I haven’t had short hair for years. I’ve always had super long hair so just having short hair reminds me of good times – just being young and silly.”

Q: Will this look help give you the ‘model edge?’

A: “For sure. I feel cute when I’m off the set but when I’m on the set and I get my hair done and they throw the bangs on the face and they’re all messy and in little pieces, then I feel sexy. It’s edgy. It works both ways.”

Linsay:

Before: Very long, burgundy in colour
After: Very short in back and angled in front, dyed dark chestnut brown
Inspiration: Linda Evangelista

Q: What do you think of your new look?

A: “I absolutely love it. I love the colour, the cut, the shape of it. I kind of thought they would cut it off just because it was so long and didn’t really have any shape but I never imagined to this extreme.”

Q: Will this help you embody a model?

A: “I really do think it’s going to help me, it helps me stand out apart from the rest. I find it to be a striking haircut, that’s always useful in the modeling world, to be noticed and striking, so it’s already helped me have the confidence.”

Maryam:

Before: Long, dark and straight
After: Angled bob cut to shoulders with severe middle part
Inspiration: vintage Vidal Sassoon

Q: What do you think of your new look?

A: “I was really happy because I don’t want my colour to be like blonde because I’m from Iran. I want to keep my culture and stuff like that so I was really happy.”

Q: Will this look help you become a top model?

A: “Yes it really helped because it’s just an edgy look and it has lots of angles to it.”

Meaghan:

Before: Wavy, warm blonde and long
After: Straight platinum blonde with fringe bangs and a weave

Q: What do you think of your new look?

A: “I didn’t recognize myself at first. It was totally astonishing. I was like, ‘Is that me?’ I kept doing a double take in the mirror and was like, ‘Who is that?’ I really liked it at first and then I got home and I took off my makeup and I was like, ‘Oh no, I am one colour. I completely am a ghost. I blend in.’ But it’s better today, it grew on me while I slept I guess. I’m more comfortable in it today. I’m actually very happy with it.”

Q: Will this help you embody a model?

A: “I hope so. The look was inspired by an early Heidi Klum so maybe with the hair I will contact the inner Heidi Klum in me and pull out something great.”

Nikita:

Before: Long and layered, side swept bangs, black with brown roots
After: Short blunt bangs, sharp angles, cut just below shoulder, dyed black
Inspiration: Bettie Page

Q: What do you think of your new look?

“I always had big edgy rock star hair and now I don’t have it anymore so I’m really sad. They cut my bangs really short, they’re probably only like maybe an inch long and it’s just below my shoulders and it’s blunt and straight and really shape-y and angles and geometric patterns. I hate my bangs. That’s not the right word. I don’t hate them but it’s just not Nikita. It’s not who I am inside.”

Q: Will this help you embody a model?

A: “I think it might help me because I don’t even recognize myself right now. I look in the mirror and I don’t see myself so maybe it will help me transform from someone who was kind of modeling part time for the last five years, traveling here and there, to someone who has committed to this full time and is willing to do anything.”

Tara:

Before: Long and straight, parted in middle
After: Shorter with big sweeping bangs

Q: What do you think of your new look?

A: “I really, really love it because I didn’t want my hair to be short … I was really hoping to keep my hair long, just an edgier style, because I feel that’s my best look.”

Q: A lot of the other girls got really drastic changes. Does getting a look similar to what you had before make it easier to be yourself?

A: “The look I have now pretty much feels like my personality … it just made me feel more confident. I was confident before but with this look I know it is an edgier look, for high fashion. I just hope that’s going to push me forward more and it’s going to make my features look stronger … I really feel that this is the look that’s going to make me Canada’s Next Top Model.”

Rebeccah:

Before: Shoulder length and curly, dark brown with some gray
After: Extremely short crop and platinum blonde
Inspiration: Supermodel Agyness Deyn

Q: What do you think of your new look?

A: “My first impression was I had the same haircut as my father but that’s not a bad thing, mine was a lot more stylish, but it just reminded me of that and made me feel I get a lot of my looks from my dad … I think a lot of people, especially with the makeup I’m wearing right now, they compare me to Twiggy and to Agyness from the Burberry ads and I think it’s very androgynous and fun. I really do love it.”

Q: Will this help you embody a model?

A: “I think it’s going to help me a lot. Now I really feel like a model with this hair.”
