The girls returned home to find a letter from Rebeccah as a ‘Jay Mail’ arrived asking if they wanted to find out what it’s like on the top.
Surprise at the CN Tower
The girls figured out Jay was in the CN Tower so after waving to him from their rooftop patio, headed over and found him waiting with CNTM Cycle 2 winner Rebecca Hardy.
Rebecca said she could relate to how stressed out the finalists must be feeling and that she’d done more in the last little while than most people get to do in their entire lifetime. Jay asked her if the competition represented a realistic pace and she said yes – when it comes to the business it’s very last minute and go go go.
Jay said the view reminded him of the view from his apartment in New York and told the girls they could see it for themselves – they were going to New York City!
The girls screamed with excitement when they learned they would be going on go-sees and meeting designers. Nikita told Maryam she better have gotten her passport. Maryam told Jay it was coming. Jay said last time when the others went to The Bahamas and Maryam didn’t, he provided her with a special photo shoot. He said this time, in fairness to the other girls, he couldn’t do that and she would be staying in Toronto.
Nikita and Heather told the other girls that since they’d been around in the industry, they’d seen things and go-sees are the most horrible thing in the world. Nikita said she went to 10 go-sees a day in Singapore and never landed a job.
While Nikita was excited to go, she admitted she was worried she would be criticized because her hips are too big.
Heather was also worried and thought she needed to step it up.
Nikita told Maryam she wished she could come and Maryam started crying.
New York, New York!
The girls arrived to the bright lights of the Big Apple and found out they’d be staying in the Presidential Suite at the Sheraton New York.
With no time to unpack, a ‘Jay Mail’ arrived that informed the girls they only had two minutes to get out the door and would be heading on their go-sees. Jay said they would have $100 cash, a map, their portfolio and an LG cell phone with their first appointment and a number to text to find out the location of their next one.
The girls ran outside in the rain to find cabs and Nikita was upset Meaghan took the cab she thought she had hailed first.
They had only a couple of hours to get to 5 designers.
Nikita and Heather struggled with hailing a cab.
Meaghan arrived first at Richie Rich. She tried on a dress and Richie Rich thought she had a great walk and would cast her in two seconds flat.
Richie Rich thought Nikita’s personality was a little reserved for runway and didn’t know if she was his cup of tea.
While Liz and Stephanie from Tibi New York thought Linsay had an ease to her walk, they were not a fan of tattoos.
Heather arrived at Alice + Olivia in biker boots, not high heels. Linsay had worn flats but brought heels in her bag and switched when she got to each location.
Alexis from Alice + Olivia thought Linsay was a pretty girl but that they tended to go with more edge.
Cynthia Steffe designer Lisa thought Nikita had a really strong look and the best photograph but didn’t think she was right for the brand.
At Alice + Olivia, Alexis thought Meaghan walked well and she would probably book her for runway, but wasn’t as keen on her doing print.
Linsay modeled a catsuit at Richie Rich and he thought she wore it well but had a little too much movement at the end of her walk.
At Tibi, Liz and Stephanie thought Heather had a very fresh look but not enough edge, and they would not book her yet.
Loris Diran thought Linsay had a very sassy appearance and nailed it after a couple of outfits, even though the industry usually doesn’t give more than one chance. She forgot her book but he managed to catch her before she got too far.
Stephanie from Tibi thought Meaghan needed to work on her head bob but would book her for runway. Meaghan left her portfolio at Tibi and didn’t realize it until she got to her next appointment at Loris Diran. He told her didn’t need to see the book and thought she was very special.
Richie Rich thought Heather was more suited for shows in Miami or L.A. than New York.
Meaghan went back to Tibi to reclaim her book.
Justin from Cynthia Steffe thought Heather was the quintessential blonde girl and was better in person than in her book.
Meaghan and Linsay arrived first at VNY Model Management, followed by Heather. Nikita got lost and arrived after the 5 p.m. deadline.
Elmer Olsen from Elmer Olsen Models surprised the girls. He told Nikita being late makes a really bad impression. The other girls received their comments and Meaghan was the one who won the challenge. Linsay placed second, followed by Heather and Nikita in no specified order in the bottom 2.
The girls hit the town
After strapping on their heels, the girls hit the town and took in the sights and sounds of Times Square. They reveled in the atmosphere as people followed them around with cameras taking pictures.
Alter egos photo shoot
The girls made their way to the next photo shoot and wondered what Maryam was up to back in Toronto.
They met Nolé Marin on a rooftop at 230 Fifth, which overlooked the New York City skyline. He was joined by Sutan, the lead makeup artist on America’s Next Top Model.
They found out they’d be doing two shots that would be compiled into one photo.
Photographer Amber Gray said the girls had to imagine themselves in two roles – the glamour diva and a crew member.
Nikita was up first as a nerdy photographer shooting her diva alter ego, followed by Linsay as a hairstylist.
Meaghan was a nerdy stylist assistant and Heather was a makeup artist.
The girls then posed as their diva alter egos, with the help of the wigs dyed by Perfect 10.
Back in Toronto, Maryam called a friend who was a photographer and did a photo shoot with a gecko.
After the photo shoot, the girls received a ‘Jay Mail’ telling them they had a $5,000 Visa card to spend in New York. The girls got Maryam a ‘I (heart) NY’ T-shirt and then went shopping on Bleecker street and to a nice dinner out.
Eliminations
The four girls arrived home in Toronto and reunited with Maryam.
At judging, Jay thought the girls looked very stylish. He introduced the judges – Mike Ruiz, Yasmin Warsame, Jeanne Beker and guest judge Richie Rich.
Meaghan was called up first for her assessment. Jay told the judges she won the go-see challenge. Mike thought her diva look was a complete departure and an impressive transformation. Jeanne thought her face conveyed a drama she hadn’t seen before. Richie Rich said it reminded him of Coco Rocha.
Nikita was next. Yasmin wanted to see more exaggeration from her alter ego. Jay thought her photographer pose was a wee bit “Urkel.” Jeanne thought there was something too real about the shot.
Linsay was next and Jay said she was hot on the tail of Meaghan in the go-see challenge. Richie Rich said she rocked the catsuit he had her wear. Jay thought her photo was ‘geek chic’ that worked. Yasmin liked how she was growing week after week and Jay thought she stepped off the plateau.
Heather was next. The judges found out she didn’t bring heels to the go-sees and Jay was appalled. He was surprised she came in last place and that only two out of the five designers said they would book her.
Jay liked the diva side of her photo but thought her face in the makeup artist side was too plain-Jane Heather.
Maryam was called up and she explained she found a friend who was a photographer and did a photo shoot with gecko. She presented them with a photo and Jay said she would be evaluated on her body of work. Jay said she was definitely at a disadvantage but thought her actions demonstrated how badly she wanted to be in the competition and the business.
During the deliberations, Jeanne thought Meaghan was a frontrunner but Yasmin thought her photo wasn’t doing anything for her. Richie Rich loved her.
Jeanne didn’t think this was one of Nikita’s best shots. Mike liked her geeky alter ego.
Mike said he had ruled Linsay out but had changed his mind. Richie Rich thought she was a model and Yasmin said Linsay had one of her favourite photos.
Richie Rich thought Heather was timid and meek. Mike thought her photo was fierce but Jeanne thought she failed to connect on a lot of levels.
The judges agreed to look at Maryam’s photo. Yasmin loved it and still thought she was stunning. Jeanne thought she was the most compelling. Mike thought the photo was a beautiful effort but it was just too much drama for him. The judges were split on whether they liked her book.
The girls were called back in and Linsay got photo of the week. Meaghan was called up next and Jay said the debate ensued over Maryam, Heather and Nikita.
Maryam was called while Heather and Nikita fell to the Bottom 2.
Jay thought both girls disappointed in New York and had OK photos. He said at the end of a long discussion, the judges wondered who would book the job. He said there’s something to be said for a little charm and personality as he pulled out Nikita’s photo. It meant Heather had been eliminated.
After her elimination, Heather said she was a little bit relieved because she realized in New York modeling was not what she was meant to do.
